European stock markets hit record highs

Eddie Sammon Investments

What has happened to the stock markets?

The main European stock markets have hit record highs in May 2024. The FTSE 100, which has been struggling in recent years, has hit a record high of 8444 on the 10th of May 2024. The main French stock index, the CAC 40, has hit 8256, also on the 10th of May and the main German stock index, the DAX, has also hit a record high of 18840. The Euronext 100 has also hit a record high today of 15555.

How have the US stock markets been doing?

US stock markets have historically out-performed European stock markets, including in recent years, but not in May 2024. The S&P 500, the index of the largest 500 publicly listed stocks in the US, has only increased slightly in May 2024 and has not hit a record high, although it is close.

Which stock market has been performing the best over the past month?

This is best illustrated by a graph and we will study the following European and US stock indices:

  • The FTSE 100 (UK)
  • The S&P 500 (US)
  • The CAC 40  (France)
  • The DAX 40 (Germany)
  • The Euronext 100 (France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Ireland and Portugal)

As you can see from the above graph, the FTSE 100 has performed the best over the previous month with a return of 6.01%, following by the DAX, the CAC 40, Euronext 100 and the S&P 500. This is a welcome change for those who are invested into UK stocks, considering the UK stock market has significantly under-performed its peers in recent years.
